Floating support: Carl’s story

Carl* was recently experiencing poor physical and mental health. His mental health problems were having a profound impact on his life and he was struggling to fulfil everyday tasks such as paying his bills. He was also experiencing physical health issues that were further compounding his mental health problems.

Carl was also having problems paying the rent for his property. As a result of this, his support worker worked with him to set up a payment plan for his rent arrears. She also helped Carl apply for Thames Water and British Gas grants to enable him to pay his bills.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, Carl had to self-isolate for 12 weeks. He was unable to get his energy meters topped up or collect his medication. Carl’s support worker arranged for his energy suppliers to send him pre-loaded payment cards and organised for his medication to be delivered by his pharmacist.

Carl’s support worker also helped him apply for a grant for a new fridge freezer and referred him to HertsHelp for extra support like help with shopping.

Regarding the support Carl received, he said:
“I have found my support worker to be extremely supportive to me. She has helped me through some difficult situations and has always been professional and polite.

“The support has been outstanding – especially considering the current climate – and I really don’t know where I would have ended up without her. I truly did not know there was help like this out there. I totally recommend Catalyst’s floating support service as they have definitely helped me move forward with my life.”
